Okay, let’s forget for a minute that immersive learning is a more engaging way to train people and let’s also forget that in many cases it can be more cost-effective, for now I want to focus on the positive benefits immersive learning has on the environment.

Large organisations can make a huge difference by going green

Global Warming is a real threat that often leaves us feeling hopeless. I sometimes think that reducing my carbon footprint couldn’t make a difference in the bigger scheme of things but it does. Scientists are urging individuals to make changes in their lifestyles because every little bit does count and if I can make a little difference on my own imagine the impact a large organisation has on the environment when they choose to be greener.

So, let’s take a moment to think about the effects traditional training has on the environment and how immersive learning may be the answer you are looking for.

1. Travel

The Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research suggest that we should cut emissions by 90% by 2050 but many large companies are still bringing employees from across countries and even continents to attend training. Immersive learning solves this problem by enabling large organisations to provide mass training straight to their computers and even their cell phones. This reduces the need for employees to travel long distances, effectively reducing companies’ CO2 emissions.

2. Catering

Back when I would work at training events I would see the food waste that training events and conferences would produce. You would not believe how much food gets thrown out without a second thought. By bringing the training to your staff you can cut out this waste almost completely.

3. Worksheets

You may think that the biggest waste with worksheets is paper, but that is actually a myth. Paper is one of the most sustainable products that exist. The big problem is ink cartridges. According to Evolve Recycling approximately 1.3 billion inkjet cartridges are used around the world annually and less than 30 percent are currently being recycled. Let’s eliminate the need for worksheets completely by creating fun and interactive games that help the learner to engage, using the digital devices they have already.

And that brings me to…

4. Accreditation and awards

Achieving and award or qualification no longer means you need to print out your certificate and hang in on your office wall. Digital certification is easily shared and you can slap it straight onto your LinkedIn as a badge of honour for all to see.
